MIDDLE EASTERN DRUMMING

A Middle Eastern drumming workshop provides a dynamic, hands-on introduction to the intricate rhythmic traditions of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Participants typically begin by learning the "language of the drum," mastering fundamental strokes like the Doum (bass), Tek (high-pitched rim strike), and Ka (left-hand accent) on traditional instruments such as the goblet-shaped darbuka (or doumbek), the riqq (tambourine), and various frame drums. As the session progresses, students explore foundational Iqa'at (rhythmic patterns)—such as Maqsoum, Baladi, and Saidi—understanding how these polyrhythmic structures provide the heartbeat for both social celebrations and belly dance accompaniment.

Beyond technical proficiency, these workshops emphasize group coordination and cultural context, teaching drummers how to listen and respond within an ensemble or "jam session".
